Engine Oil Over-Pressurization

14 Jan 2025 245

Sometimes, after changing the oil and filter, the oil system experiences excessive pressure, leading to oil leaks. Possible signs of this include a bulging gasket and/or a deformed filter can. This can happen in two main ways:

1. Immediately after installation, when inspecting for leaks, very high pressure suddenly forces the gasket out, causing a significant oil leak.

2. Leaks develop after driving a short distance, from a few miles to a few hundred Kilometers. The gasket bulges, oil leaks, and sometimes the filter can itself becomes deformed.

This problem is caused by excessively high oil pressure (see attached bulletin). The over-pressurization is due to a malfunction in the oil pump's check valve. This malfunction can be caused by:

  1. Mechanical failure of the oil pump - In this situation, replacing the part is necessary.

2.      Often, the issue is caused by leftover deposits of "gunk" and thick sludge. This material can become dislodged from the oil pan and circulate through the system. Flushing the engine can address this*. It is recommended to use an engine flush to clear these deposits from the engine's ball & spring oil pressure relief valve and the entire system.
